This week’s installment of eBay Classifieds ambassador profiles comes from Lisa Zaslow, an organizational expert and Founder of Gotham Organizers in New York City. Lisa is a sought-after organizational expert who helps increase productivity and reduces stress caused by organizational issues for a range of clients including single family homes to large corporations.

Q: Why and when did you get started in the organization business?
A: In the late 1990’s I worked as a consultant in corporate America. At one company, I opened a desk drawer and was shocked to see hundreds of manila folders packed in randomly, with labels scrawled in barely-legible pencil. Before then, I thought that everyone was as naturally organized as me. I spent the next week organizing 5 file drawers by category and sub-category
and re-labeling the folders, and had more fun than I did doing my consulting work! After September 11 I decided it was time pursue my passion for organization full-time. I named my company Gotham Organizers as a tribute to New York (Gotham is the City’s nickname).
Q: What stands out as the best thing that’s happened as a result of your business?
A: Getting to know the hundreds of people I’ve worked with is the best part of my business. It’s always a privilege when someone invites me into their space and shares their frustrations with managing their things, information and time. When I come up with a solution to a problem that a client thought was insurmountable – whether it’s clearing out clutter that has been building up for years or streamlining the process to help someone easily manage paper – it’s a great feeling!
Q: When you encounter a new client, where do you start? Is it always the same process?
A: Whether the client is a busy mom or a stressed out professional, they are usually embarrassed by their situation, so I start by asking them to tell me about what IS working. After a discussion about their goals and a tour of the space, I help them strategize about where to start and we roll up our sleeves and get right to work. While our solutions are customized for each client, the basic steps of organizing any space are the same – clearing clutter, grouping similar things together, and creating “homes” for items. I guide the process and provide encouragement every step of the way, so that it’s easy, fast – and even fun – for the client.
Q: How do you use eBay Classifieds? Can you provide an example of one item you bought or sold eBay Classifieds?
A: I always recommend that my clients list unwanted and excess items on eBay Classifieds – it’s a great way to turn clutter to cash! And in New York City, where few people own cars, it’s especially helpful for clearing out large items. One client had a huge entertainment unit that he no longer needed and would have had a difficult time removing. Within a day of posting it online, it was sold – and gone!
