Chocolate and flowers? You can do more this Valentine’s Day.

Mark your calendar and set up an alert on your phone – Valentine’s Day is around the corner and it’s time to figure out some gift ideas. Sure, you can’t go wrong with chocolate and flowers, but don’t be afraid to think outside the box. What can you get your sweetheart that is special, yet unexpected?  Often the gifts we remember are those thoughtful surprises that we mentioned months ago or didn’t think of ourselves.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Take a quick inventory of the furniture in your home. Which rooms are you spending the most time in? Is your significant other’s paperwork always spread out all over the kitchen table?  Find a desk and set up their own, personalized work space.

Do you have a sport fanatic in the house? Consider upgrading your entertainment system with a larger HD TV screen, a MLB season cable subscription, a Kinect player or a new entertainment center

Break your routine and find an activity that you can do together. Is their favorite band coming to town? Or splurge on some killer seats at your local team’s next home game. Explore other activities that you can do together all year round and look for his-and-her equipment such as bikes, skis or golf clubs.

Keep in mind gifts are not always tangible. Surprise your sweetheart with a clean house – splurge on a cleaning service.  Or encourage your other half to take their hobby to the next level and sign them up for a local class on photography, pottery, Photoshop or music.

What gifts are you thinking about this year?
