There’s nothing like a bit of nostalgia to brighten the mood in the evening. Weren’t the ’80s a fabulous time to be young? Wouldn’t it be amazing to recreate, for one night only, the golden techno glare of those formative years? We definitely think so, which is why we looked around eBay Classifieds to find some of the best things the ’80s produced.
Did you spend most of your time and all of your pocket money mastering Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Frogger? Or did you lock yourself in the rec room, playing your Mega Drive/Genesis or Nintendo until morning? Either way, you know why the ’80s is known as the “golden age of video arcade games.”
Recapture those hours of button jabbing with some five-in-one games that plug into your TV, or if you’re lucky, an authentic vintage Atari 2600.
Cosby sweaters, shoulder pads, day-glo colors – it may not be the most subtle style, but ’80s fashion did have a certain panache. The men looked like women, the women looked like linebackers at work and animatronic dolls at the club, and everyone wore more makeup than is medically advisable. If you’re not afraid to stand out or if you need something to wear to an ugly sweater party, you can’t go wrong with ’80s fashion.
Star Wars deserves its own slot in this list. There are hundreds of collectors out there, supplying all the Star Wars action figures you remember from your youth: Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo C-3PO, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, R2D2, Obi-Wan, Darth Vader/Anikan Skywalker, Emperor and Jaba The Hutt.
If, by some small chance, you weren’t a Star Wars fan, there are plenty of other action figures from that era to bring back fond memories. Check out this amazing stash of Masters of the Universe toys!
Of course, as well as video games and action figures, the ’80s were also a fantastic time for literature (of sorts). Comic books had been popular for years and the ’80s were host to the Modern Age (or Dark Age) of Comic Books. Classics such as Swamp Thing and The Watchmen series epitomized the more complex characters and story lines of this era.
The ’80s were also a prodigious time for the music industry, with the spread of cassette tapes and the supremacy of Madonna and Michael Jackson, arguably the two most influential artists of the whole decade. Enjoy!
Nothing quite captured the ’80s as well as the VHS, even though it was actually introduced in the late ’70s. A format that the film industry feared would lead to pirating and dwindling ticket sales, VHS took the home entertainment industry to a whole new level, especially once you could record those awesome TV specials and watch them year after year (like Will Vinton’s A Claymation Christmas Celebration… or was that just me?).
So what were some of your favorite things from the ’80s?
