Fight Boredom with Fun Summer Festivals

Did you know July is Anti-Boredom Month? With the little ones going bonkers around my house, I was happy to hear this because I found that it’s a perfect month to be super busy across the country. From the Balloon Festival in New Jersey to the Garlic Festival in California, it’s easy to avoid boredom this summer! Just hop in your car, step aboard a train or catch a plane and see what’s out there.

  • Have you ever heard of garlic ice cream? It’s worth a taste! The Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, Calif., has just about every garlic concoction you can imagine. Don’t miss the The Garlic Showdown, a cooking competition on the main stage! There are a few non-garlic entrées available for vampires or picky eaters, too.
  • Talk about down-home fun! Farwell, Mich., is home to the Lumberjack Festival with contests galore, including a chainsaw contest, chili cook-off, pie-eating contest and – my personal favorite — a bubble gum-blowing contest. Camping is also allowed, which can be fun for the whole family.
  • Did you know stacking 20,000 bratwursts end-to-end would reach the height of eight Empire State Buildings? You would if you went to GermanFest in Milwaukee, Wis.! During the four days of entertainment, you’ll find dachshund races, harmonica jamming, a children’s parade and carnival and oh,,,did I mention 10,000 pounds of German potato salad?
  • What soars at 500 to 1,000 feet and travels at five miles an hour? One of up to 125 hot air balloons participating in the New Jersey Festival of Ballooning! The 3-day event is full of activities like mass balloon ascension, skydiving demonstrations and music.
